# Japanese Tunnel | Underground Tunnel in Bukittinggi
Bukittinggi not only spoils the eyes with the splendor of the Clock Tower and the beauty of the Sianok Canyon. Behind the beautiful green hills, hidden is a military masterpiece left over from the colonial era which holds a dark history. This is also a form of admiration for the structure of the building. This tourist attraction is called the Bukittinggi Japanese Hole which is often visited by Bukittinggi Padang Tour Package tourists every day.
This site is known as one of the longest underground tunnels in Asia which was built for military purposes during World War II.
History of Development and Tragedy of Romusha
The Japanese Pit was built around 1942 to 1945 under the instructions of General Itagaki Seishiro. He was Commander of the 25th Army of the Imperial Japanese Army. The construction of this tunnel was carried out by forced labor known as Romusha.
To maintain the secrecy of this military base, Japan brought in workers from outside the Minangkabau area (such as from Java and Kalimantan). This was done so that local residents did not know the exact existence and function of this giant project. The construction process took many lives due to very harsh and inhumane working conditions.
Amazing Structure and Architecture
Although built with relatively simple equipment for its time, the Japanese Hole was of very sturdy construction. This tunnel is located at a depth of 40 to 60 meters below the ground surface of Sianok Canyon.
Tunnel Length: The total length of this tunnel is estimated at 6 kilometers. However, only around 1.4 kilometers is currently open and renovated to the public as a tourist attraction.
Earthquake Resistance: Its main uniqueness lies in the type of soil. The tunnel walls are made of soil which becomes harder when exposed to water. It has been proven to be resistant to the shock of large earthquakes that often hit West Sumatra.
Ventilation System: Even though it is deep underground, the air inside still flows. This is all thanks to the design of the air holes hidden in the crevices of the Sianok Canyon cliffs.
Room in the Underground Labyrinth
When exploring the Japanese Hole, Bukittinggi Tour Package tourists will pass through dark, branching alleys. Inside there are around 21 rooms with different functions, including:
Ammunition Room: Where weapons and explosives are stored.
Meeting Room: Used by Japanese officers to organize war strategy.
Sleeping Room: Row of barracks for Japanese soldiers.
Kitchen: A cooking area which also has a tragic function as a place to dump bodies through a small hole towards the bottom of the Sianok Canyon.
Reconnaissance & Prison Room: Place to hold prisoners of war and monitor enemy movements outside.
Current Travel Experiences
Currently, the Japanese Hole is well managed by the Bukittinggi city government. The hallways are equipped with lighting and cement stairs. This makes access easier for Bukittinggi Tour Package tourists when entering the hole. .
The main entrance is located in the Panorama Park area. After paying your ticket, you will descend hundreds of stairs to reach the bottom of the tunnel. The cold and damp atmosphere will immediately be felt, bringing your imagination back to the war decades ago.
Location and Accessibility
The Japanese Hole is located in the heart of Bukittinggi City, precisely in the Panorama Park area. This location is very strategic because after exiting the tunnel, visitors can immediately enjoy the spectacular view of Ngarai Sianok and The Great Wall of Koto Gadang from a height.
